About the Author

I’m Thomas, a parent of two with asthma and allergies. I’m not a doctor, chemist, or sleep scientist—I’m the person who spent a lot of time reading certification standards and tracking down studies on VOCs because my family’s sleep health matters to me personally.

My asthma means I can’t dismiss air quality concerns as paranoia. I literally feel the difference when I’m around off-gassing foam or certain cleaning products. I went down the rabbit hole researching mattresses and quickly realized the information out there wasn’t great. Everything was either marketing copy, fear-based wellness content, or generic “Top 10” lists that didn’t actually explain anything.

So I started doing the homework myself. I read the actual GOTS and GREENGUARD standards. I looked up studies on formaldehyde off-gassing timelines. I learned the difference between natural latex certifications. I documented what I found, and that eventually became this site.

I’m someone who’s already done the research you’re probably starting. I cite relevant studies when they strengthen understanding, but I’m not trying to write academic papers. I explain technical concepts in plain language because understanding helps you make better decisions. When research is limited or conflicting, I say so—and explain what we can reasonably conclude anyway.

What worked for my family might not work for yours, and that’s fine. I’m more interested in teaching you how to evaluate based on your priorities than telling you what to buy.

I’m not giving medical advice—if you have health concerns, talk to your doctor. I’m not claiming perfect solutions exist. I’m not fear-mongering about chemicals or dismissing legitimate concerns. And I’m comfortable saying “I don’t have enough information to conclude that” when it’s true.

About the Website

Tranquility of Home is research-informed guidance on sleep environments—mattresses, bedding, air quality, and materials—for people who want to make better decisions without the hype or fear-mongering.

I focus on three things most sleep sites skip: breaking down what certifications actually test (and what they don’t), explaining the chemistry and materials in plain language, and providing decision frameworks instead of “Top 5” rankings. If you’ve ever felt caught between wellness influencers screaming about toxins and mattress companies insisting everything’s perfectly safe, this site is for you.

The sleep product information landscape is frustrating. You’ve got mattress review sites that test for comfort but barely touch materials or certifications. You’ve got wellness blogs that treat every chemical like a crisis. You’ve got companies slapping “organic” and “natural” on everything while hiding what those terms actually mean.

What’s missing is clear, proportionate information that respects your intelligence. Information that acknowledges uncertainty without hedging everything. Information that helps you prioritize what actually matters instead of trying to optimize everything perfectly.

I built the resource I wish existed when I started researching. No pseudoscience about “detoxing” your bedroom. No dismissiveness toward legitimate concerns about spending eight hours a night breathing whatever’s in your mattress. Just honest breakdowns of what we know, what we don’t, and what probably matters most for different situations.

I update content when I learn better information or realize I got something wrong.
